And after running the 26.2 miles once, most competitors want to do so again soon.
Men are more likely to run to achieve personal goals or for competition, Elizabeth Loughren of Birmingham University told the British Psychological Society's annual conference in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Women are 'significantly' more worried about tackling weight gain and keeping weight off, and were also more likely to run to improve their mood.
Miss Loughren, who carried out the study while at Temple University, in Philadelphia in the U.S., recruited 507 women and 399 men aged 18 to 72 who had recently run their first marathon to complete online questionnaires.
Overall, the most frequently cited reasons for running were achievement of personal goals, to boost self esteem and to improve health.
About 70 per cent of women and 79 per cent of men said they intended to run another marathon within the next year.
'The most popular reason why - especially for men - was "to lower my finish time", Miss Loughren said. The 2010 Virgin London Marathon takes place next Sunday.
